A Lawyer’s Journey into Sustainable Farming
From Negotiating Contracts as a Corporate Lawyer to Sheep Farming
Amid the pandemic lockdown, an unexpected dream took root—raising a lamb. What started as a whimsical thought transformed into a life-altering journey, leading me to establish Sajima Farm in Vermont’s verdant landscapes. As a former lawyer with no farming experience, I’ve discovered that the most significant rewards often lie beyond our perceived limitations.
My transformation from legal professional to regenerative farming shepherd has been filled with daily challenges that continually push my boundaries. Learning to operate tractors, wield chainsaws, and master the intricacies of hay elevators – tasks that once seemed insurmountable – have become part of my daily routine. Each new skill acquired is a testament to the power of determination and adaptability.
At the heart of Sajima Farm is my small but cherished flock of Merino sheep, a historic breed that has graced Vermont’s pastures since the early 1800s, and my Babydoll Southdown sheep. Cloud, my seven-year-old guardian llama, protects the sheep. My Babydoll Southdown sheep have formed an endearing bond with him. Together, they create a unique and harmonious farm family that brings joy to my daily operations.
Environmental stewardship drives every decision at Sajima Farm. My certified organic pastures support a carefully planned rotational grazing system, ensuring sustainable land management while avoiding harmful pesticides and fertilizers. My chickens scratch, peck and turn over my soil to help create organic matter and improve the fertility of the soil. In an era where climate change poses increasing challenges, my commitment to organic farming practices has never been more substantial.
The farm’s latest addition marks a significant milestone – we’re proud to host North America’s first Cabin Anna, installed in September 2024. This innovative living space I first experienced in De Maashorst, Netherlands, perfectly aligns with my sustainable vision and represents a new chapter in simple, mindful living.
This journey represents more than a career change; it’s a testament to the possibilities that await when we dare to reimagine our lives. Soon, I’ll offer my Merino wool yarn, adding another dimension to my growing farm enterprise. But beyond the tangible products, Sajima Farm stands as proof that it’s never too late to pursue a radically different path.
Reflecting on my transition from legal briefs to farm life, I’m reminded that some of life’s most rewarding adventures begin with a simple “what if?” Whether you’re curious about sustainable farming, interested in my upcoming Merino wool yarn products, or inspired by the idea of charting a new course in life, I invite you to follow my career change journey at Sajima Farm.
